Tom de Souza takes out inaugural Tapped By Otherside 2018 Film Grant.

The 2018 Film Grant, brought together by Otherside, Luna Palace Cinemas and Revelation, awards a local filmmaker $5,000 to help produce a short film, to be screened as part of Revelation Perth International Film Festival 2018 (July 5-18).

Tom de Souza has taken out the Tapped By Otherside 2018 Film Grant. Tom was selected from an entry pool that was wholly commended by judges from Revelation Film Festival and Luna Palace Cinemas.

Tom has emerged as a vital voice of his generation, documenting his own dramatic life story in newspapers and magazines across the country. With this Film Grant, Tom receives $5,000 to translate his truly powerful journey onto the big screen, with his short film Out Of Range. The film will be screened as part of Revelation Film Festival 2018 (July 5-18).

“Enabling new voices and new approaches to have a platform is what Rev is all about” says Revelation Director Richard Sowada. “It gives us enormous pride to be part of this process and provides the opportunity which in many instances can change the course of people’s lives - that’s the authentic reward.”

Telling his story could indeed change the course of Tom’s life and film career. Tom says of the film, "I need to tell this story.  It is my story.  It is about my journey through ice addiction and back, and the long road I've walked to learn how to live life again." With the help of the film grant, Tom works to spark positive change in the world through telling his story on screen.

As the winner of the 2018 WA Film Grant, Tom joins other Tapped By Otherside grant recipients; including the 2018 Visual Arts Grant winner, Jessee Lee Johns, and the 2018 International Development Grant winner, WA songwriter Stella Donnelly, who travelled to South By Southwest in Austin, Texas.

This news follows the awarding of a $15,000 Australian Tour Grant pool to POW! Negro, Legs Electric and Davey Craddock & The Spectacles – who will all be hitting the air and stages across Australia in the months ahead.

Of the announcement of the winner of Tapped By Otherside’s 2018 Film Grant, Otherside’s David Chitty says: “As someone who has worked in both music and film in WA, I recognise how difficult it can be to get financial support for important and career defining projects. Tom’s story is one that needs to be told and it’s a great feeling to be able to give him the opportunity to tell it. I wish Tom every success with the film and with his career.”
